A ‘Google Street View’ for Business Interiors
I’m sure everyone knows this but I will say it anyway. Google Maps is an awesome, awesome tool and it has saved my life so many times already. Especially the Street View… I’m not so good with directions and you can’t expect me to memorize where I should turn left and where I should cross a bridge. And then there are times when I’m bored and I check out some random place in Street View just to see how it looks like. And let me tell you it is a very, very effective time-killer.
Ok but seriously, now that we’ve all established how wonderful Google Maps is, it’s time to brace yourselves because they’ve come up with something even better.
Today Marissa Mayer of Google presented at Social Loco some of the company’s recent advances with its products: one is the tablet vresion of Google Earth for Android, and another one is a whole new extension of Places which they call Business Photos. Business photos is essentially the Street View counterpart for business interiors.
In March, Mayer announced in SXSW that 40% of Maps usage came from mobile phones. Today she announced that on weekends it has already reached 50%. She also stated that there are now 5 million ratings and reviews in Google’s database of places.
Going back to the Google Business Photos, this feature allows users to view the interiors of businesses such as restaurants, hotels, beauty salons, etc. User interface is similar to that of the Google Street View, meaning you can take a look around by clicking and dragging your mouse. With no charges, a Google photographer can be requested to take pictures of the establishment to be submitted and posted to the Places page.
