Facebook Buys E-book Maker Push Pop Press

Facebook has acquired the digital book software company known for creating highly interactive iOS version of Al Gore’s book Our Choice, Push Pop Press.

You might wonder why is a social networking interested in e-book maker. Facebook is not getting  into the e-book publishing business, but it intend to make some of the technology, ideas and inspiration behind Push Pop Press to become part of how millions of people connect and share with each other on Facebook.

Push Pop Press was created by Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris, who are Apple veterans. As demoed in a TED talk earlier this year, the iPad version of Our Choice has a slick, almost Flipboard-esque user interface, interactive infographics and animations.

With the design, engineering talent through the acquisition, Facebook is going to incorporate the e-book service into its own tablet apps and other products.

The company has also acquired Hot Potato in 2010 and incorporated it into to the social networking to create Facebook Places.

Our Choice will continue to be sold although The Push Pop team will cease publishing e-books. Its profits will be donated to a climate change advocacy nonprofit.
