Facebook buys Face.com

Facebook has officially acquired Face.com, the company that now provides facial recognition technology. Face.com is an Israeli company and Facebook has been already using their technology to help user’s identify and tag photos.

As Facebook said:

“People who use Facebook enjoy sharing photos and memories with their friends. Face.com’s technology has helped to provide the best photo experience. This transaction simply brings a world-class team and a long-time technology vendor in house.”

“This transaction simply brings a world-class team and a long-time technology vendor in house’’’, a Facebook spokesman said.

As the facial recognition on mobile devices isn’t working all the time, Facebook will use the talents of Face.com on smartphones and camera’s to improve this technology. As it is quite common that people snap pictures and post it on the social network, this will make it faster for mobile users to tag from their mobile uploads with les friction.

There already some facial recognition apps of Face.com such as Photo Tagger and Photo Finder. Now since Facebook has bought Face.com, it is not clear whether the services of Face.com are still available for third parties.

Last April, Facebook is definitely expanding its photo technology as back in April they bought Instagram and now Face.com. So let’s see what  kind of new photo experiences Facebook will bring us!
