Facebook Timeline – A New Kind Of Profile

One of the most anticipated event in the social media world is Facebook’s annual F8 conference.  Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a bunch of features for the social network, including one called Timeline that allows you to chronologically record your entire life via pictures, Facebook updates, Likes, activities, and places you’ve traveled to.

“Millions and millions of people have spent years curating the stories of their lives, and today there’s just no good way to share them,” Zuckerberg said. “We think this is a real problem, and we think that we have the solution.”

Facebook didn’t say when it will launch.   While the current Facebook profile is completely based on showing all the latest updates, the Timeline is meant to highlight all the important updates of your life. Mark Zuckerberg points out that the only way to find these updates are to click on the Older Posts link at the bottom of someone’s profile. Timeline is supposed to change that by letting you pick what’s important. The idea is to make it easier to see events, pics and posts from your past by placing a timeline on the right edge of your profile page that breaks down your content by year and month.  You can curate “the story of who you are,” highlighting important photos, events, and apps.

In Timeline, you can see everything shared recently.  Users can click on a year in the timeline, and it scrolls down to that year.  Years can also be broken down by month.  Users can roll their mouse over a point in time and they instantly get the option to add photo and notes.  Timeline is wider than your old profile. It’s also a lot more visual.  The most interesting part is that you can add stories for a specific time period in the past.

Timeline also features tabs for music, video, and other content types. Here users can view a collection of all the content of a certain type that a friend has consumed. The music tab will show all the songs a user has listened to and playlists they’ve published, while the video tab will show a user’s most watched film and their recently watched TV show episodes.

Timeline will certainly make the profile a much more engaging place and likely increase the amount of time users spend there.
