Find Work an Hour at a Time

Earlier this week, I talked about Pursuit, an application that lets headhunters find the perfect candidate through Facebook. Now all you freelancers and the’ I work at my own hours,’ individuals can also enjoy a similar service with hour.ly which not only allows users to look for jobs but for prospect employers to conduct interview via video chat.

Brooke and Lynn Dixon co-founded hour.ly and put it through beta mode since September 2010, this New York set up desires to reduce the hiring time by allowing users to pay for their identity and criminal background check which minimizes one process for the employers allowing them to get hired quicker. The process of identity and criminal background check is done in partnerships with Trufina.

Another value added tool that hour.ly has to offer is the ability to conduct interviews through online video chat, users need not download Skype nor do they need to download Jabber because hour.ly has partnered up with yet another company called, ‘Tinychat,’ where both interviewers and interviewees can conduct an in-browser conversation.

Lynn Dixon, one half of the founders also announced today that among the 10,000 active users, 8% are employers; she also added that the qualified workers that are active on the website is a split between the tech, hospitality, graphic design and retail industry. Users can search for jobs directly from the website which will also be synced with jobs that has been posted on Craiglist and Indeed, and apply directly through hour.ly.

Freelancers, have you successfully found jobs online or is it better through personal connections?
