iPhone 4 About to Take Over DSLRs in Flickr

As of now, the Nikon D90 is the most popular camera used in terms of pictures taken that are uploaded to Flickr. But most probably, in a month or so, it will be the iPhone 4. What’s more baffling is that the Nikon D90 has been around for almost three years, while the iPhone 4 is barely a year old.

Just to give you a background, it’s not really the first time that an iPhone took over a DSLR in a fast manner. In 2009 the iPhone took over the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi as the most popular camera on Flickr. The difference with that however is that Flickr was counting all the iPhones together – the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G, and the iPhone 3GS. Now, even with the split, iPhone 4 itself is still doing great and will soon become the most popular camera on Flickr in about a year or so.

The chart below on the other hand shows the popular point & shoot cameras that are used for Flickr. You can see the obvious decline in basically all the models for Canon. About six months ago the data looked bad for point & shoots. But now it’s just plain scary that it seems as if point and shoots would become obsolete for Flickr any time soon.
