Mozilla To Build Mobile OS For The Web

In order to build an operating system for mobile devices that will run applications primarily on the Web, Mozilla is going to launch a project called Boot to Gecko(B2G). A complete, standalone mobile operating system will be built for the open web.

Developers now need to re-write their applications to run on multiple mobile platforms. Although there were attempts in the past few years to build a single platform for developers to create application that can run on multiple mobile operating system, no real solution appeared.

Mozilla declared on B2G web page that the idea is to be applied to the entire web, not only Firefox. Parts of Android kernel and drivers will be used to develop the mobile operating system as Android offer a starting point that can already boot.

The developers said the code will be “open” and released in real time.
