The year 2010 is near to an end and Google Zeitgeist 2010 list for Singapore has highlighted some interesting facts about the web searching habits of Singaporeans.

Below are this year’s overall fastest rising search terms for Singapore:

1. xinmsn – xinmsn is a pretty popular mashup of MSN Singapore & Singapore’s media maven MediaCorp, launched earlier this year that brought togather a bilingual [in English and Mandarin] portal with content from television, radio, print and web. 2. ipad – July 23, 2010 was a big day for Singapore, as Apple launched their most exciting product ever – the “ipad”! All tech-aware Singaporeans were searching for ipad related information on the web mostly to find out what the hype was all about and how to get their hands on one of these beautifully designed tablet computer. Since the launch, Apple has sold several million ipads worldwide and if you are in Singapore you can buy an iPads from their official web store, starting at S$728 with free shipping.

3. inception – The movie ‘inception‘ starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Marion Cotillard has created a lot of buzz worldwide before it’s official release on mid July 2010. All the local movie theaters went crazy when inception was finally released in Singapore. The ratings from the movie critics were moderately high and the buzz continued for months!

4. world cup 2010 – This year all Football fans in Singapore was able to catch the 2010 World Cup action ‘live’ on their television screens (thanks to Singtel & Starhub), but that didn’t stop the football frenzies from scouting the web for world cup related news, scores, videos & discussions.

5. iphone 4g – Another Apple’s latest creation made it to the top rising search term list for Singapore. But I wonder how much of those searches were actually about the iPhone 4 antenna-gate.

6. universal studios singapore – SE Asia’s first Universal Studios theme park opened in Singapore around mid march 2010 which already became a top regional tourist destination.

7. justin bieber – This 16 year old pop-R&B singer has won the heart of a lot of Singaporean teenagers. One of his popular songs of 2010, Baby (ft. Ludacris) has played on national radio and tv for a gazillion times!

8. glee – Glee is a popular musical tv series that is loved by many all over the world. But Singaporeans have taken that passion even on the streets with their frequent flash mobs all over the city.

9. yog – 2010 Youth Olympic Games (also known as yog) was held in Singapore this year.

10. resort world sentosa – Resorts World Sentosa was officially opened earlier this year which has Singapore’s two casinos, a Universal Studios theme park and Marine Life Park. Check out some of the inside pictures of resort world sentosa.

    Wow. That list can be a basis for a comprehensive behavioral study over Singapore demographics. For the service marketing industry – i don’t think this list can be of much help. But when the retail market sees such a list – Im sure it will definitely make a whopping difference in their marketing strategy and approach. Given the usefulness of the list, the most emphatic signal this gives me is that Singaporean internet users are neither matured, nor tech savvy. Good for the entertainment industry I guess.
